Vermont State Archives Databases
The Vermont State Archives maintains databases or electronic indexes for the following records and information:
- Historical Campaign Finance
- Index to Manuscript Vermont State Papers (the "NYE Index")
- Archival Records in the Vermont State Archives (Record Series)
- Right-to-Know database
- Notary Public database
- Surveyor Maps and Lotting Plans database
In addition to the databases above, the Vermont State Archives contributes to ArcCat, a cooperative catalog describing archival records and manuscripts held by various Vermont archival institutions. ArcCat is available online at: <http://arccat.uvm.edu/> State reports, publications, and related materials are located at the Vermont Department of Libraries. The Department of Libraries Catalog can be accessed at: http://web2.dol.state.vt.us/.
Records associated with Vermont but not created by public agencies are preserved by other institutions and state archival records that are not in custody of the Vermont State Archives or their creating agency may also be preserved by other institutions. The Vermont Historical Society (VHS) is the largest repository of non-government materials related to Vermont. VHS' online catalog is available at: http://catalog.vermonthistory.org/
Another option is the ArchivesGrid, a service provided by RLG, a non-profit organization of libraries, archives, museums, and other cultural institutions. ArchivesGrid is a centralized index to archival collections located throughout the world and is a valuable resource for locating records in other archives: http://archivegrid.org/.
Federal government's activities in Vermont, such as naturalization, military duty, and Federal court activity, are retained at the Federal level. The National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) is responsible for preserving Federal archival records. NARA's databases are available online: http://www.archives.gov/research/tools/.
