The Department of Buildings and General Services (BGS) and its predecessors, under 22 V.S.A. § 454, have issued thousands of disposition orders for specific agency and department records. Although the State Archives has statutory authority to identify the permanent (archival) and non-permanent records of the State, we CANNOT authorize the destruction of any public records until after July 1, 2008. For more information on the consolidation of public records management under the Office of the Secretary of State (Act 96 of 2008) please read our special announcement about the future Vermont State Archives and Records Administration.

Each agency has an assigned records officer who is responsible for assisting employees with their records, including the application of disposition orders. To obtain information about your agency's records officer and existing disposition orders contact the Office of the Information Specialist, Department of Buildings and General Services, at: http://www.bgs.state.vt.us/gsc/pubrec/infospec/.

All active disposition orders remain in effect until superseded by an approved record schedule. The State Archives offers a Targeted Assistance Program (TAP) for agencies wishing to update their record retention policies or create record schedules for the first time.

BGS also has three "Housekeeping Disposition Orders" or record schedules that may be used where applicable.
