INDEX TO MUNICIPAL DISPOSITION ORDERS

This section is an index to disposition orders that are currently in effect for municipal records, including orders that are only partially superseded. Superseded disposition orders are considered invalid and should not be used. NOTE: This index is temporary, and will be phased out as disposition orders are superseded by new record schedules.

If you do not see a record listed on this index, review the other resources listed on the Record Retention page.

What are Disposition Orders? -- How to Use This Index

Legal records custodian to which orders were issued:

What are Disposition Orders?

A disposition order is a standing authorization for the destruction or other disposition of specific records after certain requirements have been met. Disposition orders were issued to public agencies between 1938 and 2004 by the former Public Records Division of the Department of Buildings and General Services or its predecessors. Orders were issued at the request of the public agency, which retained the authority to interpret the orders’ intent.

The Public Records Division was superseded in 2008 by the Vermont State Archives and Records Administration (VSARA). VSARA will gradually replace the disposition order system with a statewide records management program that uses record schedules.

How to Use This Index

The index is organized by the records custodians to whom disposition orders were issued. Only the authorized custodian may use a disposition order.

Each record is listed with the description (if any) provided on the disposition order. VSARA does not have the authority to interpret what was intended by the description of a particular record.

The last column gives the six digit disposition order (D.O.) number and the number of the specific item on the order (ex: .001). When a disposition order has been partially superseded, additional information is provided.

To locate the correct retention period for a record, review the disposition order or other legal authorization listed.

If you do not see a record listed on this index, review the other resources listed on the Record Retention page.
