Frequently Asked Questions
WELCOME to the Vermont Secretary of State's Online Notary Resource Center. This Reference Center provides links to information of interest to Vermont Notaries Public.
Included is the "Short Guide for Vermont Notaries Public" which provides links to the laws governing notaries public and information on how to become a notary public, the term of office, and a description of the responsibilities of the office. There is a short discussion on issues of conflict of interest and potential liability for improperly performing the duties of the office. The Guide is also available in hardcopy as a convenient desk reference. To request a copy, please contact Kathy Watters or call (802) 828-2308.
Included is a section on Apostilles and authentication of documents to aid those interested in foreign adoption, international commerce or study abroad.
The "Frequently Asked Questions" section has been added to address questions routinely received by the office relating to notaries and documents. If you would like to see other issues addressed here, we would be happy to hear from you.
The new "Notary Public Database" is linked to our in-house database of notary public names. This section may be used for verification of a single notary public, providing the notary's contact information and commission status, or to download lists of Vermont notaries statewide, by county or by a specific zip code to assist you in locating notaries on a local basis.
