Vermont Elections: 1778-

Since the eighteenth century the secretary of state has been assigned various election duties from attesting election results (1797) to temporarily preserving canvasses of votes for congressional elections (1802). With the adoption of the Australian Ballot (1890) the secretary was given more direct responsibility for the conduct of elections and is now the state's chief election officer.
