CERTIFIED COPIES OF VITAL RECORDS
Purpose of Certified Records:
Certified copies of vital records are often required for legal purposes such as:
- passports
- school entrance
- employment
- proof of citizenship
- governmental benefits
- insurance

New Records: 2004 to present
Contact the
Vital Records Division of the Department of Health (also includes any amendments and
corrections that occurred since 2003.
Older Records: 1909 to 2003
Contact VSARA's Vital Records Certification Office (see "Order Copies" box for forms) for vital
records going back to 1909.
All Years
Contact the
town clerk’s office of the town where the vital event took place. The
recording of all marriages, births and deaths by town clerks was enacted into
Vermont law in 1799. Duplication at the state level was not required until 1857.
FEES FOR CERTIFIED COPIES
Certified copies of vital records cost $10 per certification and may be requested online or by mail; the online request form is for certified copies only. All requests, whether received by the online form or by mail, are processed within five (5) to 10 business days.
